The Eclipse That Set Mallorca in Motion

On 12 August 2026, Mallorca experienced one of those events that will remain in our memories for a long time. For a few minutes, all eyes turned to the sky to witness a total solar eclipse, an exceptional phenomenon that brought together thousands of people across different parts of the island.

But the eclipse did not only transform Mallorca’s sky. For a few hours, it also transformed the island’s mobility.

Thousands of people looking for the perfect spot

From early afternoon, residents, tourists, families, groups of friends and astronomy enthusiasts began travelling to beaches, coastal areas and open spaces with good visibility towards the horizon.

One of the busiest locations was Santa Ponça, where around 8,000 people gathered by the sea to experience the eclipse.

Special glasses, cameras, telescopes and mobile phones were all part of a very different afternoon, as many people chose to travel together and share one of the most anticipated astronomical events of recent years.

An event that also changed mobility in Mallorca

The large number of visitors led to special traffic measures and access controls being introduced in different parts of the island.

Some coastal areas, roads and particularly attractive observation points experienced a high concentration of journeys within a very short period of time.

The eclipse once again highlighted something especially important in a destination such as Mallorca: when many people need to reach the same place at the same time, good transport planning makes all the difference.

Avoiding unnecessary journeys, reducing the number of vehicles and properly organising pick-up and drop-off points can make large events much easier and more comfortable to enjoy.
